Politics and Policy

POLITICS MATTERS
BECAUSE
POLICY MATTERS

Ever played tennis without “concern” for rules of the game? Or driven on the wrong side because traffic rules don’t “interest” you? Or smoked in public area because you don’t “care” about discomfort to others? Rules, policies & frameworks allow orderly functioning of the world we live in which otherwise would have been an insane place to navigate for 8 billion people. In the public space, policy allows for smooth functioning of society & policy-making is a primary function of politics. I find it amusing when people say they are not concerned with, interested in, or care about politics. The reason perhaps is because of the inability to distinguish politics from the politician. One is a function & while the other a person. Often the disdain for the person results in bashing of the function. But that would be missing the trees for the woods. You don’t trash the car if the driver is inebriated, do you? The importance of policy-making & hence by incidence politics cannot be understated. The entire public operating system from corporation to the individual is run by policy making & hence politics. WealthCreation, WealthDistribution, DeathTax, Inheritance RightToProperty all are governed by policy. For corporations their CorporateStrategy depends on policy. In fact for iconic entrepreneurs from Rockefeller to Dhirubhai a key determinant of their success was understanding the importance of policy And flavor of policy making depends on policy ideology of various political party’s. FreeMarket Capitalism, Communism Socialism Theocracy TheocraticMonarchy etc. all have their declared ideological proclivity. Some have been rejected outright, some tolerated & some widely accepted around the world. Democracy allows you to not just register your vote but to register your interest. So if you want your child to inherit your wealth, or if you’d rather live in a contributory social commune, then choose the policy ideology accordingly & by incidence the politician & the party. But be concerned & interested in politics for the sake of policy … IT MATTERS BusinessStrrategy PublicPolicy IndianElections HeliconConsulting Careertainment
